Baiyue tribes - The Hundred Yue Tribes
Baiyue is actually an umbrella term used by the Han Chinese to denote the peoples south of the Yangtze river, The Baiyue were probably the heirs of the Hòa Bình culture with a life style, a language, traditions, moral standards and a specific foodstuff. They were a people of skilled farmers: They grew rice on burned land and flooded fields and raised buffaloes and pigs. They lived also by hunting and fishing.
The Baiyue tribes shared some common traits. They lived in stilted houses, cut their hair short, grew rice, held the bronze drum as sacred symbols of state, were skillful metallurgists who made sharp swords, we believe that Shennong has been thought to have taught us not only their practices of agriculture, but also the use of herbal drugs, the presence of Shennong in the cultural life of Baiyue tribes, through the reality of on-going daily life in Vietnam witth festivals, which means “crop praying” festival, is an important event to report their production results to the Agriculture Genie (Shen Nong) and ask him for good weather, fruitful trees, productive animals, and healthy people.
The culture of the Baiyue tribes was rich with folklore, poetry, and humanistic teachings. Baiyue was a peaceful society that did not engage in warfare with other regions. The philosophy of the Bai Yue always spoke of peace, compassion, and the importance of the human heart. Unfortunately, due to their peaceful nature, the society became highly vulnerable to the nomadic tribes from the north, who raided and captured much of the Bách Việt’s land, along with their culture.
Have recent scientific discoveries, provides evidence how the Chinese depict in their language people knowing how to grow rice and drink tea, they have taught the folks from the North the culture of rice and not the other way around as has been written in a large number of Chinese and Vietnamese historic documents.
