Provisions for the Soul - BY TRIAN NGUYEN

The Yao objects in the Museum of International Folk Art’s Sacred Realm exhibition have eye‑opening stories to tell.

Colorful and detailed, Yao ceremonial paintings and other ritual objects tell us stories about Yao cosmology and the status or rank of the shaman who used them.

Tea culture - a central role in society

Tea has been an essential part of daily life for Vietnamese families for thousands of years, a refreshing beverage believed not only to calm and centre the mind, but to help ward off a number of common illnesses. A staple at celebrations and family get-togethers, tea and its associated rituals are intrinsically tied to concepts of hospitality, respect for one's elders, and peaceful communion with nature in Vietnam.

Situated at an altitude of nearly 1,400 meters above sea level, Suoi Giang in Van Chan district, Yen Bai province is the home to the oldest tea trees in Vietnam.

"I have travelled across 120 countries which have tea trees in the world, but I’ve not seen any perennial tea trees like those in Suoi Giang," wrote an academic of the USSR Academy of Sciences, MK Djemukhatze, in the visitor’s book of Suoi Giang in 1960.
